YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 28, NOYAN TAPAN. No salt is currently
imported into Armenia, except for granulated table salt that is
imported from Ukraine. Habratsum Sedrakian, Vice President for
Economic Issues of the Avan Salt Enterprise CJSC, the only
prodicer of salt in the country, told NT correspondent about it,
adding that only salt produced by their enterprise (including
table salt, technical salt and that used for feeding cattle) is
consumed in the domestic market.
According to him, only technical salt produced by their
enterprise is exported from Armenia and only to one country -
the neighboring Georgia. About 2-2.5 thousand tons of technical
salt is exported to Georgia annually, and the enterprise's
production accounts for 12-14% of salt sales in Georgia. The
company produces 14 thousand tons of table salt, 7 thousand tons
of technical salt and 7 thousand tons salt used as food for
cattle.
The company does not produce granulated table salt. H.
Sedrakian said that imports of granulated table salt are
declining with every passing year. The imported salt accounts
for 5-8% of domestic sales.
