MORELIA, FEBRUARY 28, NOYAN TAPAN. Chess-player Peter Leko
(Hungary) performed successfuly in the first circle of the
Linares chess super-tournament in the Mexican city of Morelia.
He gained 5 points from the possible 7 points and is at the top
of the tournament table. Levon Aronian, representative of
Armenia, falls behind the leader only with 0.5 point. The world
cup-holder performs a high-quality game: he won in 3 games, drew
3 ones and was defeated only once.
After the first circle the participants took places on the
table with the following sequence: 1.Peter Leko (Hungary) 5
points, 2.Levon Aronian (Armenia) 4.5 points, 3. Pyotr Svidler
(Russia) 4 points, 4-5. Vasili Ivanchuk (Ukraine) and Temur
Rajabov (Azerbaijan) 3.5 points each, 6. Fransisko Valejo
(Spain) 3 points, 7. Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria) 2.5 points, 8.
Etien Bakro (France) 2 points.
Now the participants of the tournament have left for Spain
and on March 3 the competition will restart in Linares.
