ARMENIAN MALE CHESS-PLAYERS WIN, FEMALE TEAM DEFEATED

YEREVAN, October 28 (Noyan Tapan). The Armenian male
chess-players performed successfully in the 36th World Chess
Olympiad held in the Spanish city of Calvia. During D 11 the
Armenian male national team beat the national team of
Switzerland with a score of 2.5-1.5. Vladimir Hakobian, Levon
Aronia and Gabriel Sargsian drew their games, and Rafayel
Vahanian scored the winning point. The veteran of the Armenian
chess played excellently in this Olympiad: he earned 7.5 points
in nine games. After this victory the Armenian national team has
29 points and places third. The national team of Ukraine (32
points) is in the lead, the Russian national team (29.5 points)
places second.
The Armenian female national team was beatten by the
Russian team with a score of 1:2. Elina Danielian, the leader
of the team, registered the victory in her games, but Lilit
Mkrtchian and Siranush Andreasian were defeated. Today when 3
days are left until the end of the Olympiad, the Armenian female
chess-players earned 19.5 points (they are in the middle of the
second ten chess-players of the tournament table. The Chinese
team, earning 26 points, is in the lead of the contention. The
national teams of Georgia (22 points), Holland and the United
States (21.5 points each) follow it.
In D 12 the Armenian male chess-players will compete with
the chess-players of the United States and the Armenian women
will compette with the national team of Slovakia.
