The European Movement International (EMI) welcomes the progress made at the EU Summit on 30th January but warns that the measures taken are not enough. "The results of this Summit are too little too late.. We need a fiscal pact, together with a solidarity pact", said thePresident of the EMI, Jo Leinen. The EMI deplores that only 25 members agreed on common rules. "The fact that the Czech Government joined theUnited Kingdom in its opt-out from the fiscal compact shows the limitation of the intergovernmental method", criticised Jo Leinen. "We need an economic government in the EU based on the Community Method and accountable to the European Parliament". "The goals set out in the pact for growth and employment and especially the measures planned to reduce mass youth unemployment are welcomed", stated Jo Leinen. "Finally, the EU Heads of State and Government are tackling the social issues of the crisis. Growth and unemployment have to get the same priority as economic and fiscal issues. Beyond redistributing available funds for social objectives, the EU needs new programmes for growth and employment to lead the way out of the crisis", emphasised the EMI President.
