The European Union is encouraging deeper political integration between the national parties of Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries and EU political families. To discuss the advantages and risks of this process, the EU Advisory Group hosted a case analysis presentation on “Eastern Partner Countries National Parties’ Integration into the EU Political Families” on 12 June. The presentation targeted political parties and organisations interested and influential in the process of political integration. The case analysis aimed at increasing public awareness about the EU’s political parties – their activities, values and the principles they are based on. In his opening remarks Ambassador Traian Hristea noted that not only the political parties from the Eastern partners, but also the EU political families can benefit from integration. "This process allows us to transfer, spread and promote political principles and values beyond the EU,” he added. Representatives from Armenia’s political parties, think tanks and political foundations as well as international organisations and state bodies joined together in debating political issues relevant to the integration process. Participants noted that the acceptance of Eastern Partner political parties into EU political families may enhance the EU’s knowledge and understanding of EaP countries. Moreover, integration implies that a national party will assume responsibilities and thus, to a certain extent, become more accountable for its policies. The case analysis presentation, held in Erebuni Plaza, Yerevan, was conducted by Mr. Eduardo Lorenzo Ochoa, EU Advisor on Strengthening Democratic Structures.
