YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 25, NOYAN TAPAN. The editor-in-chief of
Azg daily Hakob Avetikian is not particularly optimistic about
the normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations which he
describes as an "entangled knot". Nevertheless, he believes that
even in case of collapse of the normalization process, Armenia
will succeed: first of all, by having an image of a reliable and
peace-loving country.
H. Avetikian said at the February 25 meeting with reporters
that two scenarios are possible for the ratification of the
protocols. The first scenario: Turkey does not change its
position and does not ratify the protocols, after which the
tension will grow in the region, and the second scenario: Turkey
ratifies the proticols with some reservations which are
completely unacceptable to the Armenian side. "In other words,
Turkey may ratify the protocols with the following aim: so that
Armenia will reject them," H. Avetikian noted.
Azg's editor-in-chief expressed an opinion that in this way
Turkey will try to present Armenia as a side that ruined the
normalization process - in recent period there have been a lot
of articles with this logic in the Turkish press. In case of
such developments, according to H. Avetikian, Armenia will face
a diplomatic war. In this connection it is necessary to unite
and efficiently use all potential of the Homeland and the
Diaspora. "It is hard to confess, but in this diplomatic game
Armenia has only one card - the Genocide problem," H. Avetikian
said.
