On February 7, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Edward Nalbandian met the President of Iraqi Kurdistan region Masoud Barzani.

 

During the meeting, a range of issues of the development of ties between Armenia and Iraqi Kurdistan region were discussed. The Head of Iraqi Kurdistan Masoud Barzani welcomed Armenia’s decision to open Consulate General in Erbil and expressed confidence that it would contribute to the expansion of cooperation.

 

The sides discussed joint efforts towards the deepening of trade and economic collaboration. President Barzani and Minister Nalbandian shared the view that launching of direct flights between Erbil and Yerevan would give new impetus to the business ties.

 

Regional developments, international community’s fight against extremists were on the agenda of the meeting. The Leader of Iraqi Kurdistan region thoroughly presented to the Foreign Minister of Armenia the situation, which has unfolded in the North of Iraq as a result of activities of the terrorists, and the fight, waged by the Peshmerga, against terrorist groups. In this regard Minister Nalbandian attached significance to the guarantee of security of ethnic and religious minorities, particularly, the Yazidis, who live in the Northern Iraq; and reaffirmed Armenia’s solidarity with international collective efforts in the fight against extremists.
