The Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC) and VivaCell-MTS presented the outcomes of yet another initiative implemented in the frames of the joint Alternative Energy Project. The initiative included installation of street lighting system with 37 LED lights in borderland village of Vahan, Gegharquniq region. As a result of the implemented program, outdoor lighting has been provided along a 1,100 meter-area of the village.

 

The launch of the system was attended by VivaCell-MTS General Manager Ralph Yirikian, FPWC founder Ruben Khachatryan, head of Vahan community Gurgen Balyan and community residents.

 

The environmentally friendly and energy-efficient LED lights will reduce energy costs up to 80%. Outdoor lighting will be provided from 10 pm to 1 am in summer, from 6:30 pm to 12 am in winter, and all night long on holidays. LED bulbs are efficient and durable, and last much longer than the regular ones.

 

The Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC) and its general partner VivaCell-MTS attach great importance to the use of latest technologies in environmental protection initiatives which promotes nature conservation, energy efficiency and community development. Within the frames of the project installation of a solar water heating system has been implemented in the kindergarten of Vahan community ensuring up to 60% saving on gas consumption and heating costs.

 

“VivaCell-MTS is here to encourage the villagers of Vahan. Our visit has two aims: here and beyond the line. The programs implemented in borderland communities are means of disarming the enemy showing it that life continues here in spite of its desire to see the village deserted. Our second aim is to gradually decrease the gap between the capital and the remote regions by extending a hand to borderland communities and offering solutions to acute problems. Vahan means shield, and we should do everything to keep the shield of our borders unbending,” VivaCell-MTS General Manager Ralph Yirikian said.

 

About the Alternative Energy Project

 

The Alternative Energy Project aims to reduce pollution and protect the environment by using using alternative energy resources, particularly solar thermal systems and LED street lights. This year the project is implemented in a number of communities in Aragatsotn, Tavush, Vayots

 

Dzor, and Syunik regions. As Armenia has a fairly good potential for solar energy, investments in alternative energy and energy-efficient technologies can significantly benefit to the solution of environmental and social issues. The project is a new format of the long-term cooperation between the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC) and VivaCell-MTS in the field of environmental protection and sustainable use of natural resources.
