Armenian authorities refrain calling Sumgait events as genocide occurred on February 26-29th, 1988, in that way endangering the existence of Armenians in the region. On February 29, during the press conference expressed such kind of opinion the coordinator of ''Assembly of refugees from the Azerbaijani SSR" Mariam Avagyan, referring to the massacres of Armenians in Sumgait occurred 28 years ago.
According to him, the tragic events of Sumgait have no difference compared with the Genocide of Armenians took place in 1915.
«It is impossible to describe Sumgait events in words: In the backdrop of general atrocities, Armenians managed to stand up and defend their families and relatives»,- said M. Avagyan, adding that due to the strong will of Armenians, they managed to avoid having more victims.
According to him, both in 1915 and 1988, the civilized world was silently followed how the Turks devoured Armenians.
"We must be honest with ourselves and accept that since 1915, the fascist attitude of France, Great Britain, Russia and USA towards Armenians have not changed yet",- emphasized the speaker.
According to her, it was proved in Hungary in 2004, when the sleeping Armenian officer was killed by the Azeri officer, after which the Azeri murderer recognized as a hero, and also the resolution about Sarsang pond which was adopted in the PACE whereby the victim and executioner were equalized.
M. Avagyan claims, that by that silence civilized world contributes to the distortion of events which have occurred with Armenians over the years.
"Till now there are no qualification of the cases happened in Azerbaijan SSR, in the case when that events were absolute genocide which were managed and organized by the Azerbaijani authorities",-said M. Avagyan noting that Armenia's authorities under the influence of external forces stubbornly refuse to call that events genocide.
Sociologist Armine Adibekyan said that in the case of Khojaly it is necessary to make an international investigation, and that is not profitable for Azerbaijani who calls Khojaly events “genocide”.
