ISTANBUL, 9 OCTOBER, NOYAN TAPAN-ARMENIANS TODAY: The
Turkish village of Vakfl is the only village with solely
Armenian residents. The locals are hot-tempered and enthusiastic
people and these days they are waiting for the signing of the
Turkey-Armenia Protocols and the football match to be held in
Bursa with high emotions and great interest, as reported by
"Sabah" daily correspondent Savash Ay.
According to Ay, village head Perch Gartun recalled that
former president of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosyan is also from the
native Vakfl village.
A celebration is scheduled to take place in the village in
a couple of days. The villagers have invited 20 university
students each from Istanbul, Ankara and Armenia to follow-up on
the signing of the Protocols, watch the football match and then
send their message of friendship to the world.
The average age of villagers is 50 because all youth have
chosen to live in Istanbul or have traveled abroad. The
villagers are involved in agriculture. There was a time when
Armenians were living in seven of the 22 villages in this
region. The novel "Forty Days of Musa Dagh" by Franz Werfel made
this territory famous and many tourists visit the village. The
village has a church, but no priest. The only school in the
village was closed down due to lack of students. The five-six
schoolchildren attend the seminary of Samanadagh. The villagers
speak Armenian, Turkish and Arabic and they are all literate.
