YEREVAN, AUGUST 26, NOYAN TAPAN. The RA State Commission on
Protection of Economic Competition stated that the situation
with respect to competition of essential goods in Armenian
market is under control. In particular, taking into account
consumers' worries in the past two days concerning granulated
sugar prices and a possible shortage of sugar, the Commission
has tightened control and is assisting the economic entities
engaged in the market with some measures in order to ensure the
observance of competition rules.
According to the Commission's report, there were poor
harvests this year in India - a major supplier of raw material
for sugar production in the world - because of unfavorable
weather, as a result of which sugar prices have risen in the
international market. Besides, the appreciation of foreign
currency was an additional factor in Armenia. As a consequence,
the price of granulated sugar has risen by 10-20 drams in shops.
The Commission does not believe that there have been
violations of the competition legislation in the market. Anyway,
the developments in the market are under control, and respective
steps will be taken in case of necessity.
