YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 22, NOYAN TAPAN. 40 leading boys and girls aged up to 12 took part in the traditional Chess Festival held on September 19 in the park of Yerevan State University. Haroutiun Barseghian, a pupil of the Republican Academy of Chess, received the cup instituted by UN. Tigran Haroutiunian (Children's Republican Chess Sports School) and Karen Hovhannisian (Gyumri) received the second and third prizes. They were also awarded monetary prizes. Grand master Smbat Lputian, the Chairman of the Republican Academy of Chess, received a special prize of former Chairman of UN Armenian Association, prematurely deceased Karen Asrian. The festival was dedicated to the 17th anniversary of Armenia's independence and to UN Peace Day.
