YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 24, NOYAN TAPAN. The Information
Technologies Month held in Armenia from September 15 to October
15 2006 was a success, with such leaders of the IT sector as
Microsoft, Sun Microsystems and Alcatel participating in it. The
Chairman of the IT Foundation Garegin Chugaszian stated at the
November 24 press conference that one of the event's purposes
was to raise the general information level. According to him, it
is important that now the matter concerns the whole system and
not only the sector.
Attaching special importance to the intellectual potential
of Armenia, G. Chugaszian noted that according to a study of
brains, Armenia is in 20th place in the world, while taking the
country's population into account, Armenia is among the top ten.
The Deputy Chairman of the IT Development Support Council
Armen Grigorian said that it was for the first time that the
state and not an international organization financed such an
event. In his words, this shows that the IT sector is in the
center of the state's attention. At the same time, he noted that
the issue of creating a free market zone for the sector was
repeatedly raised but rejected.
