YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 14, NOYAN TAPAN. In 2006, Armenia is in
80th place among 177 countries by its human development index of
0.768. Consuelo Vidal, UN Resident Coordinator in Armenia and
UNDP Resident Representative to Armenia, stated this at the
November 14 press conference, explaining that since 1990, every
year the Human Development Report of the UNDP publishes the
human development indices (HDI) that give a broader definition
of prosperity than the gross domestic product (GDP). The HDI is
a combination of three components of human development: to live
a long and healthy life (measured by life expectancy), to be
educated (measured by the degree of adults' education in various
systems) and have dignified living conditions (measured by the
national income corrected by the equivalent of purchasing
capacity).
It is noteworthy that Norway with its human development
index of 0.965 is in first place, while Niger with its index of
0.311 is in last - 177th place.
