ARMENIAN MALE CHESS-PLAYERS CLOSE TO VICTORY

YEREVAN, October 29 (Noyan Tapan). Only 1 day is left until the completion of the 36th World Chess Olympiad held in the Spanish city of Calvia on Majorca Island. During regular D 13 the Armenian male national team finished its game with the French team with a score of 2:2. Levon Aronian and Rafayel Vahanian drew their games. Smbat Lputian registered victory and Vladimir Hakobian was defeated. Today having 33 points the Armenian national team places third and is behind the national team of Russia only with 0.5 points. They may be ahead of the Russian team if they register victory in their game with the Georgian national team during last day. The national team of Ukraine, which earned 36.5 points, is in the lead, it, in fact, provided the title of the Olympic champion. The Armenian female national team succesfully performed in D 13, beating the national team of Moldova with a score of 2.5:0.5 and earning 22.5 points. They place 14th today. The Armenian female chess-players will compete with the national team of Azerbaijan during the last day to be held on October 29.
