FOOD PRICES RISE BY 0.6% IN ARMENIA IN FEBRUARY 2008

YEREVAN, MARCH 4, NOYAN TAPAN. 0.6% inflation was
registered in Armenia's food commodity market in February on
January 2008, which was mainly due to seasonal changes in prices
of some foodstuffs.
According to the RA National Statistical Service, there was
a 2.2% growth in prices of vegetables and potato in February
2008 on February 2007, 7.9% growth on January 2008. There was a
growth in prices of onion (0.9%), beet (1.6%), potato (2.2%),
carrot (5.5%), chives (19.1%), cabbage (34.8%), herbs (47.2%) in
the indicated period.
0.3% inflation was registered in the commodity group of
meat products in February on January 2008, mainly due to a 10.7%
rise in the price of pork. In parallel with it, there was a fall
in prices of mutton (2.1%) and beef (1%).
25.6% inflation was registered in the commodity group of
butter and vegetable oil in February 2008 on February 2007, 0.3%
inflation - in February on January 2008, mainly due to a 6.2%
rise in the price of butter. Vegetable oil prices fell by
0.6-4.3% in February on January 2008.
Inflation in the fruit commodity group made 8% in February
2008 on February 2007 and 0.1% on January 2008. The latter was
mainly conditioned by a 0.5-46.8% growth in prices of pear,
grapes, pomegranate, tangerine, lemon and blood orange. Banana
and apple prices fell by 13.7% and 1.2% respectively in the
indicated period.
There was 0.1-0.8% growth in prices of alcoholic drinks and
cigarettes (due to 0.2% rise in prices of alcoholic drinks),
bread products, confectionery, coffee, tea, cocoa in February on
January 2008. 17.8% price fall was registered in the commodity
group of fish products in February on January 2008, which was
mainly conditioned by a 20.2% fall in price of fresh white fish.
The average price of eggs fell by 2.4% in February on January
2008. There was a fall in prices of granulated sugar (0.5%) and
milk products (0.2%) in Armenia in February on January 2008,
while prices of in the commodity groups of soft drinks and other
foodstuffs remained at the level of the previous month.
