YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 12, NOYAN TAPAN. "First I have read
about Armenia this morning in the encyclopedia. Of course, it is
little for completely getting acquainted with a people having a
centuries-old history and strong culture," Akram Khan, the
manager and dancing-master of "Akram Khan" British modern dance
group, declared at the September 12 press conference held in
Yerevan.
According to the cheif dancing-master of the dance group,
before coming to Armenia they performed on tour in Georgia.
They are in Armenia for the first time and the impression is
warm and reassuring. "I hope that the Armenian spectator will
like our dance," Akram Khan mentioned.
The group will present its last work, "Ma," to the Yerevan
spectator. Dancers together will musicians, a cellist, a
drummer, and a singer will represent the relations between
maternity, people and earth. The essays by Indian novellist
Arundhati Roy are the basis of the work showing Indian
villagers' life, how they were deprived of their land by force.
"Ma" means the mother of the land or earth. The work is aimed at
once more expressing the voice of the land and earth, which is
rudely denied by the civilization," the art worker mentioned.
According to Akram Khan, the dance created by him
synthesizes cultures of 2 countries, national dances of India
and Bangladesh, as well as fuses classical and modern dancing
art: "This modern dancing style is a peculiar display of
reaffirmation of my generation. The synthesis of classical and
modern dances unanimously brings a new positive display: the
traditional is kept and at the same time the new is created.
To recap, on September 13 and 14 the "Akram Khan" dance
group will perform at A.Spendiarian National Academic Theater of
Opera and Ballet at the invitation of the British Council.
