YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 28, NOYAN TAPAN. In 2007 the Human Development Index (HDI) for Armenia is 0.775 which gives Armenia a rank of 83rd out of 177 countries of the world. Consuelo Vidal, the UN Permanent Coordinator and the UNDP Resident Representative in Armenia, said this at the November 28 press conference, mentioning that the Human Development Report is published every year since 1990. The HDI measures the average achievements in a country in three basic dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life (as measured by life expectancy at birth), knowledge (as measured by the adult literacy rate) and a decent standard of living (as measured by the log of GDP per capita at purchasing power parity (PPP) in USD). It should be mentioned that according to that list, Iceland ranks the 1st, the Human Development Index for which is 0.968, and Sierra Leone ranks the last 177th place with the index of 0.336. According to HDI, from the countries of the Central and Eastern Europe and of the CIS region the Ukraine, Georgia and Azerbaijan are closer to Armenia having the indices of 76, 96 and 98 respectively. Iran and Turkey with their indices took the 94th and 84th places respectively.
