YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 10, NOYAN TAPAN. Fourth Power daily was
not published on November 10, and instead, a Fourth
Sovereignty newspaper similar to it in the content and design
appeared at news-stalls. The publication of Fourth Power well
familiar to the readers was stopped based on the decision of Gagik
Khandanian - a judge of the general jurisdiction court of
Yerevan's Kentron and Nork-Marash communities, is said in the
statement issued by several NGOs on the same day.
"The reason for this decision was the economic dispute
between Gind printing house and Ogostos news agency. We, the
representatives of NGOs, believe that the ban on the printing of
this newspaper violates the principle of free dissemination of
information. Such a decision, regardless of its motivations,
conflicts with Article 27 of the RA Constitution and Article 10
of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and
Fundamental Freedoms. Based on the above mentioned facts, we
demand that:
- the court decision conflicting with democratic principles
should be declared invalid,
- the persecution of Fourth Power newspaper should be
stopped and the financial problems be solved on the respective
dimension," is said in the statement signed by the Committee for
the Protection of Speech Freedom, Yerevan Press Club, "Internews"
NGO for Assistance to the Mass Media, Comprehensive Information
Institute-Armenia NGO, "Asparez" Club of Journalists in Gyumri,
Vanadzor Press Club, "Transparency International" Anticorrution
Center, and Helsinki Committee of Armenia.
