YEREVAN, OCTOBER 6, NOYAN TAPAN. During the recent official
visit of the Armenian president to Georgia, an agreement was
reached to reconstruct Batumi- Akhaltskha -Akhalkalak - Gyumri -
Yerevan motorway. The RA minister of transport and communication
Gurgen Sargsian said at the October 4 meeting with reporters
that the motorway will be shorter by 30% than the current road.
The length of current Yerevan-Batumi road is 700 km, while the
new one will be 450-km long.
The minister announced that the presidents of two countries
instructed the competent officials - the Armenian minister of
transport and communication and the Georgian minister of economy
to organize a meeting within the next two weeks in order to
dicsuss the issues related to the motorway's construction. It
was mentioned that the reconstruction work will be funded by
international financial organizations, and the Asian Development
Bank takes a special interest in the project.
