YEREVAN, JANUARY 29, NOYAN TAPAN - ARMENIANS TODAY. There
is still much work to be done with respect to mines in Armenia:
it is necessary to determine the economic effectiveness of their
operation. Spokesman for the Armenian President Victor
Soghomonian stated this at the January 29 press conference.
Providing explanations on the statements made during the January
24 meeting of the Armenian President Robert Kocharian and the
Russian President Vladimir Putin, V. Soghomonian said that an
Armenian-Russian commission on uranium mning issues should be
set up. Studies on uranium reserves in Armenia were done in the
Soviet time, and documents confirming the existence of these
reserves are now kept at the appropriate department, whose legal
successor is now Rosatom.
According to V. Soghomonian, the operation of these mines
will allow to replenish reserves of the Armenian Nuclear Power
Plant. At the same time, he noted that uranium will not be
enriched in Armenia.
It is noteworthy that Global Gold Corporation (US) has
shown interest in the issue of conducting a research on uranium
resources in Armenia.
