YEREVAN, May 11 (Noyan Tapan). The Ministry of Culture and
Youth Affairs has become obsolete long ago and is an
unnecessary structure. Hakob Ghazanchian, Artistic Director of
Yerevan Theatre of Young Spectator, expressed such opinion in
his interview to a Noyan Tapan correspondent. According to him,
today the Ministry has no levers of influence on the creative
work of the theatres or other cultural institutions. "This
structure only appoints or dismisses directors, for which it's
unnecessary to have such inflated organs," H.Ghazanchian said.
The Artistic Director of the Theatre of Young Spectator
said that it's already several years that the theatre is
deprived of state grant, the Ministry considered that the
Yerevan Mayor's Office should do this and the latter supposed
that this should be done by the Ministry. As a result, the
theatre was deprived of state financing while the expenditures
on the maintenance of the theatre building are large and the
prices for tickets are lower than in other theatres subject to
the Ministry. According to H.Ghazanchian, the Ministry pays for
the expenditures of boiler-houses of all theatres except the
Theatre of Young Spectator. The theatre carries out payments for
electricity at the expense of miserable revenues from the ticket
sale. Besides, the theatre pays the VAT and income tax from the
sums recieved from the ticket sale. By the way, the telephones
of the theatre are at present disconnected because of debts.
According to H.Ghazancian, there are theatres that exist at
the expense of the resources allocated by the state, without any
performances, and instead of creation they are engaged in
obtaining money. He considers that it's impossible to carry out
new stagings in such conditions. "A desperate situation was
established and I already seriously think about leaving the
theatre," the Artistic Director of the Theatre of Young
Spectator said.
